“Bridging the gap between academia and industry”

AACWelcome to the Southern California Chapter of HIMSS Academic Alliance page. The Academic Alliance was formed in 2008 to assist the local chapter in achieving its mission by creating a new and broader knowledge base, increasing membership and attendance at SoCal HIMSS chapter programs, by providing internships, mentorships, scholarships to students to be future HIMSS members and contributors to HIT, and by developing and implementing cross-collaboration between faculty/students and healthcare professionals. The AAC is made up of students, faculty, and healthcare professionals, contributing mostly from their homes and offices.

Innovation Behind the Academic Alliance Initiative

The Academic Alliance is unique in that it embraces the value added theoretical knowledge contribution from the major academic institutions in Southern California region by combining the practice and theory of Healthcare IT (“HIT”) and disseminating this new knowledge base throughout the Southern California community.  By integrating university thought leaders and students, the SoCal HIMSS chapter is creating and fostering a new set of thought leaders to meet the future challenges and issues in HIT.

It is through these alliances that the SoCal HIMSS chapter is achieving its mission by creating a new and broader knowledge base, increasing membership and attendance at SoCal HIMSS chapter programs, and by providing scholarships to students to be future HIMSS members and contributors to HIT.

Purpose of the Academic Alliance

This innovation was implemented to increase membership in the SoCal HIMSS chapter, increase attendance and quality for our SoCal HIMSS chapter programs, and as a method of “bridging the gap” between industry and academia by combining a mixture of practical and theoretical components.

The implementation of this alliance is a way for the SoCal HIMSS chapter membership to promote leadership and professionalism to the community by providing the three …ships: mentorship, scholarship, and internship opportunities for students.  This alliance also provides professors with practical industry information that they can incorporate in their syllabi.

This program also creates an opportunity for SoCal HIMSS chapter members to be a guest lecturer at these universities, with collaborating professors.  The membership will also be introduced to academic programs that might be of interest, for them to gain further knowledge, or obtain a degree for job advancement.

It is also possible that the SoCal HIMSS chapter members can hire faculty or students to work on projects in their own organizations where theoretical expertise is needed, where there is a knowledge gap, or interim skills are needed.  In a quid pro quo fashion, SoCal HIMSS chapter members may be able to assist professors in their research by bring a practical, hands-on approach component to the faculty member’s project.
